Ohms Rant: Parents Television Council rips MPAA December 10, 2010

”The entire point of the film ratings system is to protect children and guide parents as they make informed choices for their families.” ~Parents Television Council.
No, the point is that parents should protect their own kids…not the MPAA. If I trust the MPAA to protect Ben, then he’ll end up some raging violent gun nut. But on the bright side, he would probably only say 1 to 2 “F words” every 90 minutes or so. Who are these people and why don’t they know how to do some research or make their own decisions? Parents that take their small children to something like, oh I don’t know, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, then get upset at the film, theatre, MPAA, etc. because their kid got scared are idiots. Yeah, I said it. Take some responsibility and realize that there is no way to properly “rate” any artform based on some council’s “values.”
I know, they’re “only” saying that they don’t like the precendent that a producer can get their rating overturned. But the bigger issue is, why the hell does this group care, and why do they exist in the first place?

Welcome to a new feature on my blog. The Ohms Rant. These posts will be my outlet for the mental anguish I experience from pop culture. There may be cursing. There may be an overuse of exclamation points. There may also be hypocrisy, but that’s ok, it’s my blog.
Today’s Rant is about movies claiming to be “romantic,” and “comedies,” starring such accomplished thespians as Katherine Heigl, Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, and Kate Hudson. What the hell is wrong with these films? I read this morning that the new Heigl debacle, “Life As We Know It,” was number one at the box office yesterday, and my head almost exploded. I’ve seen the previews for this film, and I thought that perhaps this would be the end of these bizarre films. Surely audiences would reject a film about the hilarity (and romance…don’t forget the romance) that ensues after your best friends die in a car accident and leave you their kid. Why do they leave them their kid? I’m guessing it’s to teach their friends a lesson about life, because, you know, the world revolves around Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhmel. You know what movie I want to see? The movie where the friends go to their lawyer to make a will, and because they hate their baby SOOOOO much, they decide to bequeath her to their walking romantic comedy cliche friends who hate each other. Now that’s a movie!
Why are these films like this? I’m not some chauvinist pig who hates movies about relationships, or thinks every movie has to be “serious.” Can we just please have real situations and characters from this planet? Why do these movies need such elaborate crazy plots?
“I work for a magazine, and how much you want to bet I can get him to break up with me in 10 days?”
“I’m planning your wedding, I can’t do that! Ok, I’ll do that.”
“I need to go to Ireland to propose to my boyfriend. Why? Uh, because it’s a tradition stupid.”
“I’m going to be a single Mom, because I’ll never find the man of my dreams, oh wait…”
“I need to get married in 48 hours or I lose my inheritance!”
“I made a mistake! I need to get running and let them know how I feel!” *cue Spencer Davis Group*
Please stop the insanity! Just give us real characters, and real situations!
